The Childhood Epilepsy Information Service (CEIS) is launching a national schools programme called ‘Epilepsy Education 4 Schools’. A team of trained education officers will work in the south east of England to deliver epilepsy awareness lessons directly to children and young people in their schools. They will also be involved in delivering epilepsy training to school staff so that many more children with epilepsy will get the support and understanding they need. ICIS has recently been informed of a company offering ‘free’ benefits advice in Preston, Lancs, but who, in fact, charged one client 45% in DWP benefits back pay. As the company is not a claims management company, it needs no Ministry of Justice regulation nor a Credit Licence, so are not in breach of any regulations. Please note that there are advice centres who do offer free benefits advice with no hidden charges. Free childcare for Training and Learning for Work scheme added 6.11.09
The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) aims to help parents from low income families with free childcare whilst they train or learn, to help gain employment. The scheme is open to families with one partner in work, an annual household income of £20,000 or less, a child/children aged 14 or under (or aged 18 or under with disabilities). Aiming High for Disabled Children, West Sussex (added 26.5.09)
West Sussex County Council is developing short break services for disabled children. Short breaks provide all sorts of opportunities for disabled children and young people. Spending time away from their primary carers may allow them to experience and enjoy new relationships, environments and positive activities. They also provide an opportunity for carers to recharge their batteries. A short break may include a few hours, a day, evening, overnight or weekend activity. They could take place at home, at an approved carer's home, in the community or in a residential setting. Read about the programme here
Disability Living Allowance - extension for visually impaired people added 26.5.09
The government has announced that severely visually impaired people will be entitled to the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance from 2011. Only people disabled before the age of 65 can claim Disability Living Allowance.

Giving World Online has free items for charities and community groups added 25.7.10
Giving World Online (GWO) is a scheme to help community groups and charities access free surplus goods from businesses and organisations to help reduce the amount of goods sent to landfill. GWO are encouraging businesses in the South East region to use GWO's free service to redirect their surplus goods onto charities and groups that could make use of them for their beneficiaries. Director Rama Bhalla said: "Our service is available to all charities and community groups but we are particularly aware that many smaller organisations are often volunteer-led or operate on very limited funds. We are focussing our efforts on engaging more businesses to use GWO to directly help community groups in their locality access surplus stock which could be of great benefit." Free homes checks from West Sussex fire & Rescue Service are offered to help people with disabilities protect themselves from fire. Fire officers will visit a person's home by appointment, go through important safety advice and fit smoke alarms where needed. Special equipment is available for people with sensory or visual impairments or restricted mobility. Arun Bond Scheme - help with deposits and rent in advance added 21.6.10
Arun District Council can help people find accommodation in the private rented sector to prevent homelessness. The Bond Scheme helps by offering a bond (or guarantee) to landlords as security instead of a deposit. It gives individuals the chance to save the deposit money ove rtime, rather than finding it at the start. People must pay regular, agreed instalments into the Bond to save the value of the guaranteed bond by the end of the tenancy. This is a government scheme which may help if you are having serious difficulties making your mortgage repayments and are in danger of becoming homeless if repossessed. To be eligible, households must include someone in 'priority need' such as a pregnant woman, someone with dependent children, or someone who is vulnerable because of old age or a physical or mental impairment. Contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau or Shelter to see if you are eligible. You may also be eligible for help from the Mortgage Rescue scheme if you are in ‘negative equity’. NHS Health Check to help prevent heart disease, stroke and kidney disease added 8.6.10
NHS Health Check is a new national programme for adults in England between the ages of 40 and 74, targeting those who are not known to have diabetes, stroke, heart and kidney disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels. Patients will be sent a letter from their GP inviting them to take up a Health Check. This is a 20-30 minute check to assess people’s risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes or kidney disease. Simple tests such as blood pressure and a finger prick test for cholesterol will be taken. Results will be discussed with the patient and personalised advice given on how to lower risks and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some people may need to have further blood tests at their GP surgery and treatment or medication may be prescribed to help maintain their health. A family-based programme to help children aged 7-13 years who are above their ideal weight. If you have electrical medical equipment in your home or anyone in your home would have a significant health issue following a power cut, contact your electricity supplier to register for their Priority Register Service. In the event of a power cut, they will endeavour to reinstate the electricity supply as quickly as possible.
People to benefit from bowel cancer screening added 12.3.10
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the UK. People aged between 60-69 and registered with a GP in Sussex will be sent a letter of invitation to take the test. The test can be done in the privacy of your own home. If you would like to be tested, a free test kit will be posted to you and will include step-by-step instructions. Further support is available from the freephone helpline on 0800 707 6060. A specially designed, pre-paid envelope is provided to return the kit for analysis at the screening programme's laboratory in Guildford. People are encouraged to help foil fraudsters by passing scam mail, such as letters claiming you have won a foreign lottery, into their local library. The County Council Trading Standards Service and the Library Service have teamed up to back Scamnesty 2010 - a nationwide Office of Fair Trading initiative against mass-marketed scam mailings. Library staff will pass details of all scam mail to Trading Standards. Message in a bottle added 21.12.09
The Lions Club sponsors this 'Message in a Bottle' scheme, which encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a plastic bottle that can easily be found in an emergency. The information is kept in the fridge where the emergency services can find it in the event of being called to your home. The containers can be obtained free of charge from health centres, GP surgeries and chemists. All costs are paid for by the Lions Club.
Sports activities for 5-19 year olds who are in receipt of or eligible for the middle or higher rate care component of Disability Living Allowance (and their siblings). There will be up to eight sports, including football, basketball and cricket. The cost per day is £5 and transport and carers can be provided if necessary. Activities will be run in partnership with Albion In the Community (Brighton & Hove Albion) and funded by Aiming High for Disabled Children. The dates and venues are: 5th August - Oakmeeds Community College, Burgess Hill; 11th August - Thomas Bennett Community College, Crawley; 20th August - St. Andrew’s High School, Worthing; and 24th August - St. Anthony’s School, Chichester.

Following funding from the European Social Fund, the Worthing Parent and Family Care Foundation has formed a partnership with Brighton-based Mums in Biz to pilot a training project to help mothers of children with special needs become self-employed. Brighton & Hove Albion has teamed up with Adur District Council to help unemployed people get some exercise and support to finding work. Every Thursday from 10.30am-12.30pm, an Albion coach is having a kick-about at Sompting Recreation Ground. After the football, people can find out about free training courses run by the Albion, including sports coaching, It training, and basic literary skills. There will be free internet, a chance to talk to a health trainer and get job-seeking advice from Nextstep, which can help with CVs, searching for jobs, interview skills, confidence building and training. A training programme for staff working and volunteering with young people has been set up which supports young people aged 13-19 years with a wide range of issues, such as an introduction to youth work, personal safety, substance misuse, sexual health and equalities. The programme, which aims to provide useful resources, information, advice and guidance, is a partnership initiative between Horsham District Council, Churches Together, Kingdom Faith, West Sussex Council for Voluntary Youth Service and West Sussex Youth Service.
