People with cancer to the pelvic area who are undergoing radiotherapy are being urged to sign up to a pioneering hyperbaric oxygen therapy trial by the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation and the Institute of Cancer Research. One of the research sites will be at St Richards Hospital in Chichester. The therapy involves the patient sitting in a chamber and breathing 100% oxygen, with periodic breaks, while the air pressure around them is gradually increased. The treatment lasts for 90 minutes and will be given five days a week for eight weeks. The trials hopes to help people with side effects which affect the bowel and stomach. Some small studies suggest high pressure oxygen is able to permanently improve the side-effects of radiotherapy in patients being treated for cancers of the cervix, womb, ovary, prostate, testis, rectum or bladder. The study will look to see whether this therapy works for patients who have been suffering side effects for at least one year after treatment. For information on taking part in the trial contact Sue Martin on 020 8661 3273/3460/3986.
