Head Forward is a new website from Mind providing guidance to mental wellbeing information and services across West Sussex. It is looking for service users who would like the chance to be one of the faces of the website? Anyone interested in attending a photoshoot in Horsham some time in September is welcome - you don't have to be stunningly beautiful/handsome, just have a great smile! Change4Life Campaign added 19.8.08
Many children face an increased risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and depression in later life because of their existing lifestyles. A new campaign - Change4Life - which is supported by the Department of Health, encourages families to eat well, move more and live longer. There are already many examples of successful initiatives that encourage families to lead healthier lifestyles. Alan johnson, Secretary of State for Health, is personally writing to every identified local activist whose efforts encourage healthier eating and activity amongst children in their locality, thanking them for their support. Headway supports people with acquired brain injury, their families and carers. Wheelchairs wanted for Wheels-4-Africa added 14.7.08
Wheels-4-Africa, a local charity run by West Sussex Association for the Disabled member Adrian Mills, is seeking donations of lightweight or sports wheelchairs that can be used in rough terrain, on behalf of the Terence Mills Trust. It costs £2000 to send a wheelchair to Africa. The Trust was set up in memory of his father Terence to help disabled people in Africa. Wheels-4-Africa are currently raising funds for their latest project to build a rehabilitation centre to help and support disabled people in rural areas. Time for Parliament to end the legal approval of hitting children - urgent action needed added 9.6.08
The Children Are Unbeatable! Alliance are seeking support to help change the law on assault so that children have the same protection that adults take for granted, sending the clear message that hitting children is as unacceptable as hitting anyone else. They are looking for an amendment to the Children & Young Persons Bill, which is currently before the House of Commons, and are asking that as many people as possible put pressure on their MP to vote for equal protection for children. Senior Persons' Council - Horsham District Council added 9.6.08
Older residents of the Horsham district are invited to contribute ideas and concerns to the Senior Persons' Council. Established in 2005, it aims to give older people an opportunity to put forward their ideas to the District Council and to undertake their own initiatives to benefit the local community. Recent examples have included helping to produce a 'highway code for mobility scooter users' leaflet; and campaigning about the closure of local post offices. Easier shopping in Horsham - new initiative added 9.6.08
A new method of providing feedback on public buildings in Horsham town centre is being piloted by Horsham District Council. Members of thep public can provide comments or concerns about accessibility of any business, public building or other service by completing a card which is available from libraries, the Access Forum, council offices and other help points, or providing online feedback at www.accesshorsham.co.uk. The Access Officer will record all feedback and reports will be sent to premises for which feedback has been received. This service is particularly useful for parents with small children and prams, the elderly, wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility or sight and hearing impairments. Informal adult learning mapping exercise added 25.4.08
Mapping exercise on the provision of informal adult learning is being undertaken by Crawley Council for Voluntary Service and West Sussex County Council. They are keen to know of any learning opportunities that are taking place, particularly among under-represented groups such as BME groups, unemployed people, single parents, disadvantaged young people over 19 years, travellers, homeless people, etc. The learning could be personal development, health, family skills, community safety/groups, life skills, beauty courses, dance/drama, music, bikes, etc. If you can provide this information please email: eesipw@crawleycvs.org

Sussex Cancer Network added 7.4.08
A group of cancer patients and carers working with professionals in the NHS to improve cancer care for everyone. The network is interested in hearing from people who have recent experience of cancer care locally, particularly people who are housebound, live in rural communities, and people from different backgrounds or cultures. They focus on issues that are important to people affected by cancer so that they can help influence things from the patient and carer perspective. Members are happy to visit support groups to talk about the work they do, and they welcome new members.

West Sussex Credit Union needs pledges added 28.1.08
A Credit Union is a new way for vulnerable people living in West Sussex to save and/or borrow money. It is a savings and loan co-operative that is owned by its members with no outside shareholders. As a member you can borrow money at competitive interest rates and your savings are protected by the Financial Services and Compensation Scheme, the same protection given to customers of banks and building societies. The credit union needs 1000 pledges to enable it to start business. It is regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Parents - Make Yourselves Heard Forum added 15.6.07
Forum for parents and carers of children and young people with learning difficulties and other disabilities to discuss issues affecting them. It is a chance for parents to have greater involvement in decisions about current services, the support offered or planned changes; share experiences with other parents; and a voice to help ensure children are fully included in society and have access to the support and facilities necessary to sustain and improve their well-being. The forum meets every three months and take place alternately at Southern Area Professional Centre, Glebeside Road, Worthing and Mid Sussex Area Professional Centre, Clarence Road, Horsham.
